MAGICK

Magic is the ability to compel change to occur in conformity with the will.”

- Aleister Crowley

Magic is the art and practice of manipulating natural energies to cause a needed or wanted change. Everything around us (seen and unseen), including ourselves is composed of energy. Just as we live in a vast universe filled with countless stars, so do entire universes of a different sort exist within the microscopic makeup of our being.

Energy is responsive and dynamic in character. Although it has been compared to many things, energy is unique, as you will see through working with it.

The shape energy takes forms the physical world we see all around us. We constantly interact with this energy. It transforms and renews its shape all the time. These changes are in response to our thoughts, emotions, and actions whether or not we are aware or understand it. These occurrences are completely natural but the process is one we don’t consciously think about and most are completely unaware of it.

When we begin to bring our conscious mind and our Satanic strength of will into the equation, we create something of a different situation. Suddenly, that which seemed completely out of our control (the shaping of energy and therefore the world around us) becomes precise.

THAT is Magic.

Remember in the Introduction to these lessons I spoke of the Indo-European root of the word “Witch” meaning “to bend” or “to change.” The ability to bend energies causes changes in the world around us.

In other words, all magic is the exercise of energetic sourcing (source-ery). We draw on that source energy, and focus it, and then release it to power our specific intent. When done properly, that energy will manifest our desire from the ethereal plane into the physical world.

Make no mistake about it, magic IS a science.

For most, this shaping of energy occurs at the level of our unconscious beliefs and emotions. It is automatic and many believe it to be as out of control as our unconscious itself. Often times, most do not even know what their unconscious beliefs and emotions are, let alone how they affect us on an energetic level. When we bring our conscious mind to bear on this process, we create a very different outcome. When we recognize and accept that we are responsible for shaping ourselves and the world around us, we understand that this is a deliberate skill that lies directly in our hands.

Again, THIS is magic - the conscious focus of intent in order to control the all-encompassing energy.

But here’s the catch…it is not from our ordinary level of consciousness that we do this. Magic is done through a higher state of consciousness which some call the Higher Self.

Ancient wisdom teaches the existence of something that transcends everything we know, and yet is an essential part of our being. This has been referred to by many different titles: The Soul, the Dark Current, or our Higher Self. But if this mysterious “being” transcends everything we know, how can it truly be called “self”?

By whichever title you give it, the Higher Self is a part of you that connects you directly to other realms of existence. It is eternal, infinitely wise, and exceeds your everyday consciousness. It is in touch with Satan because it is a part of Him. Attaining knowledge and Mastery of the Higher Self and its depths of wisdom and nurturing it to grow ever stronger, is hopefully a goal each of us holds very sacred.

To some, this concept may seem highly unlikely. However, a growing body of scientific evidence suggests that there IS a source of superior intelligence within all of us.

You are NOT simply the total of your conscious and subconscious. There is a part of you that transcends both. It exceeds anything you know with your present awareness. Those of you who know me and have worked with me in other studies at other times, may recall me teaching that we are the sum of three – we are Human, we are Demon, and we are Divine (God/Goddess). These three are not only entwined with our immortal Souls, but they are also a part of our Infernal Father Himself. We are His children. We are the coursing Blood of the Serpent.

It is not difficult to tap into your Higher Self, but it takes time and practice to learn to do it at will.

There are many external factors that can be used to aid in bringing forth this shift of consciousness – Visualization; Trance; Tools, such as candles; Ritual; and Chanting, just to name a few.

As a child, I would make drawings of the things I wanted, and they would manifest. Sometimes, I still use my art for magical purposes. I also enjoy writing spells and I personally take pleasure in writing many of my spells, so they rhyme. I do that because the concentration it takes to fit the pieces together in a rhyming form makes them feel more powerful to me.

The point is there is no ONE best way to achieve the shift of consciousness. The best way will be the one that works for YOU. This means that you must study and try as many different techniques as possible because your growth depends on your willingness to experiment and combine the techniques that will serve you best.

Before we go further with this lesson, and get into the different exercises that go with it, I want to take some time to discuss responsibility, and I really want to underline the importance of this topic because most people cannot and will not accept the truth of it.

You alone are responsible for all that comes into your life – the good, and the bad. I can’t begin to tell you how much I hate it when I see actors, sports figures, etc., thanking “god” for their good fortune. We make our own good fortune. If you won the big game, it is because you worked to hone your skills and played better than the others. If you fail a test, it’s because you didn’t put in the time needed to do the work. Bad luck and karma are nothing but fearful excuses.

We have all been given an amazing gift. We get to experience the physical world and ALL it has to offer, and we have the FREEDOM to taste every last drop of it. That can be a very scary thought if you look at the whole of it…because not everything in this physical plane is pleasurable, and not all we “taste” is good. But, make no mistake – the choices and decisions are ours alone.

Many religious followers prefer to live their lives believing that they are attached to the whims of the god that they worship. Satanists are NOT followers. We do not beg on bended knee for favors from Satan – we manifest our desires and Satan does not interfere with our freedom to do so.

When something great happens in your life – thank yourself. When something shitty happens in your life – blame yourself.

Karma. This is just another fear tactic, although it is actually a very clever one. Look back to the Introduction to these lessons where I spoke of “Black, Gray, and White” Magic. Under the law of Karma, if you do something good, something good will happen to you. If you do something bad, something bad will happen to you.

OK. Define good and bad.

If your “good” deed caused someone to miss a life lesson that was needed, would you still consider that to be good?

What if you teach someone a valuable life lesson through an act that could be considered hurtful – would that be “bad”?

Karma can only work if it is self-inflicted.

Take time and recognize that you alone are responsible for ALL that you manifest.

These lives belong to US. Live it with passion because your soul is immortal, but this is the only physical life that (insert your name here) will live. You may well reincarnate into this physical world again, but the person who is (insert your name here too please) will never be again. In your next physical existence, should you choose to have one, you will be a different person than you are now. Whatever you decide to do, whichever path it is you decide to follow, do NOT waste this incredible gift, and do not forget that whatever happens here, happens by your own hand.

DO WHAT THOU WILT SHALL BE THE WHOLE OF THE LAW!

Let’s take a look at the components that affect the results of our magic:

The first component is the INTENT.

Intent is the specific purpose or goal of the magic you wish to manifest. Although this sounds rather simple, it can be quite tricky. For example, if your magical intent is to bring prosperity to yourself and you haven’t thought beyond that, your outcome may not be what you had expected. Why? Simply because your goal was not specific. Why do you want prosperity? Prosperity in what form? Do you want a better job? Are you looking for more money? Are you looking for security? Then what? Intent demands that you not only know what you want, but that you also understand the purpose of your desire and what it means to you. So be specific.

The next two components go hand-in-hand, and are FOCUS and VISUALIZATION.

Focus is the action taken to set your intent in motion, and Visualization is an extremely important technique in magic. When you visualize something, you imagine it in great detail and picture it as clearly and as strongly as you possibly can. Practice visualizing your intent as though it is already in your grasp. At first, you many have to close your eyes to do this with great detail. This is something that takes a lot of practice, but when it is done properly, you will be very happy with your progress, and eventually, you will be able to achieve this without needing to close your eyes. As with all things, the more you practice, the better you will become.

The final component is ENERGY.

As stated at the beginning of this lesson, Energy is everything and is everywhere. In magic, we set our Intent, we Focus and Visualize what we desire, and then we use Energy to accomplish the task. Raising that Energy is not the end of the work; it is the RELEASE of that Energy into the Ethereal Plane that sets our magic in motion.

Magickal Timing...

Borrowed from Lair of the Serpent

Written by: Morgaine Druantia

Regardless of what you may read, the truth is that Magic, Spells and Ritual may be done whenever you wish to do them.  If there is a friend that is need of healing energies from you, there is no reason to wait for a certain moon phase to work your magic.  BUT, when you are at the beginning of your studies of the Craft, it is very wise to plan your magical workings in order to ensure the best outcome.  If that sounds as though I’m contradicting myself, I assure you that I’m not.

Imagine for a moment that you are about to take a rowboat out in the ocean.  You begin at the shoreline, and push past the breaking waves.  When you are finally able to pull yourself into the boat, and begin to row against the incoming waves, it takes every last bit of your strength to get beyond them.  When you finally do, you can certainly move more easily, but until you build up your strength, you are going to be exhausted by the time you reach your goal.  Magic works somewhat in the same way.  Anything is possible, but it is easier to get the results you seek when you move WITH the current.  My advice is that you learn how to follow the current through this lesson and once you become comfortable with your workings, and see the different ways your magic will manifest for you, THAT will be the time to experiment beyond the constraints of the timing set within this lesson.

If there is a specific working that you require, please come to me (or any of the clergy members here on Lair) and I will be more than happy to assist you.  You may work with me privately, or we can certainly work as a group with all of the members of Lair, who feel comfortable doing so, participating.

The Moon

The Moon completes a full orbit around the Earth every 29.5 days. The phases of the Moon are:

  • The Dark Moon (approximately three nights before the New Moon)
  • New Moon (the Moon is not visible at all)
  • Waxing Moon (when the Moon gets bigger in the sky, a narrow crescent growing from right to left)
  • Waning Moon (when the Full Moon is decreasing in size, moving back towards the New Moon, gradually changing to a decreasing crescent from right to left)
  • Gibbous Moon (the period between the first quarter and Full Moon and between the Full Moon and last quarter)
  • Full Moon (appears approximately 14 days after the New Moon and reflects the maximum amount of light from the Sun)
  • The Sidhe Moon (the second New Moon to occur in any month)
  • Blue Moon (the second Full Moon to occur in any month)

Each full moon of the year has a name (I have attempted to include all of the names from the many magical traditions):

January - Wolf or Old Moon
February - Snow Moon (also Storm and Quickening Moon)
March – Crow (also Sap, Worm, Chaste, Maple Sugar or Crust Moon)
April – Pink Moon (also Planter’s, Grass, Seed, Sprouting and Wind Moon)
May – Flower (also Milk, Budding or Hare Moon)
June - Strawberry Moon (also Rose, Dyad or Sun Moon)
July - Buck (also Mead or Thunder Moon)
August – Corn (also Sturgeon or Wort Moon)
September - Harvest or Fruit Moon
October - Hunter’s or Blood Moon (appears red/gold in the autumn sky)
November – Beaver (also Fog or Frost Moon)
December – Oak (also Cold or Long Night’s Moon)

Magic and the Moon Phases

The New Moon

Age 0 to 1 Day.  The Moon is directly ahead of the Sun, it rises at dawn and sets at sunset.  The New Moon’s power is much like a seed planted, the spells cast at this time will continue to increase in power as time goes on.  This is a time to work for self-improvement, prosperity, romance, and healings.  The inspirations that came to you during the time of the Dark Moon are now ready to be sent into the ether for growth and manifestation.  This is a time to work with the Sun God, Ra and/or the Goddesses Sekhemet, Vesta and Heartha.  This is also a powerful time to evoke Lucifer.

The Waxing Crescent Moon

Age 1 to 5 Days.  The Moon isd 45 to 90 degrees ahead of the Sun.  The Crescent faces East.  The Moon rises at mid-morning and sets after sunset.  This is a time of rebirth, work for animals, change, emotions, recharging the bonds of love, career and prosperity.

The First Quarter

Age 6 to 7 Days.  The Moon is 90 to 135 degrees ahead of the Sun.  It rises at noon and sets after midnight.  As the Moon is Waxing* (*from the time the New Moon is sighted until it reaches its height as the Full Moon, the cycle is known as a waxing moon) its power is constantly increasing.  This cycle is perfect for constructive magic such as love, wealth, success, strength, courage, healing, friendship and luck.

The Waxing Gibbous Moon

Age 8 to 14 Days.  The Moon is 135 to 180 degrees ahead of the Sun.  This is a time of patience, an occasion to work on your magical and personal balance.  It is a time to devote to drawing your energy for the upcoming Full Moon.

The Full Moon

Age 14 to 17.5 Days.  The Moon is 180 to 225 degrees ahead of the Sun.  The Moon rises at sunset and sets at dawn, this is why a midnight Ritual is preferred as the Moon is directly overhead and at its most powerful.  Spells cast at this time are ripe for manifestation.  This is the perfect time for divination, prophecy, protection and any working that requires extra power.

The Disseminating Moon

Age 17.5 to 21 Days. The Moon rises at mid-evening and sets at mid-morning.  The Time of the Souls (3am) is the midpoint during this time.  This is the time for banishings and works should focus on addiction, decisions, relationship endings, emotions, stress, protection.

The Waning Moon/Last Quarter

Age 21 to 24.5 Days.  The Moon is 270 to 315 degrees ahead of the Sun.  The crescent shape turns toward the West.  The power of the Moon is now being drawn inside for later use.  Now is the time for casting spells requiring resolution or for something to be concluded.  The Waning Moon is used for banishing magic, to drive out addictions, illness and/or negativity.

The Dark Moon

Age 24.5 to 28 Days.  The Moon is 315 to 360 degrees ahead of the Sun.  The Moon rises at 3am and sets at mid-afternoon.  The strongest pull of the Dark Moon occurs around 10am.  All of the power of the Moon is internalized.  This is a time to be extremely cautious when casting spells because the power of the Moon is extremely strong, but unpredictable.  This is a time for cursing and destruction rites, although this is certainly not advised for the beginner (we will cover much more of these rites in more advanced lessons).  It is best to use the Dark Moon to ignite the creative experiences and inspirations that will come forth in the weeks to come.  Desires imagines as the last sliver of the Moon’s light fades through the Dark Moon period until the light appears again, have special empowerment to manifest. Affirming them again at the moment of the New Moon gives an extra push to their initiative. The Dark of the Moon is time of legendary power for creation. It is best used to rest, become quiet, invite calm and serenity into your life, and spend time in personal reflection, play with new intentions, new desires, new directions. It’s a time to stay at home, both physically and psychologically, and tend to your private world. Play with ideas and think of things you might like to create over the next several weeks, realizing this is a time to think, daydream, and fantasize without taking action. All magic begins in the mind. Everything in the world originated in the nebulous intellectual energy of an idea, a dream, a desire.

The Sidhe Moon

The Sidhe Moon is the second New Moon to occur in any one month.  It is considered to be the reflection of the New Moon in the Otherworlds.

The Blue Moon

A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon to occur in any one month.  It is considered to be the reflection of the Full Moon in the Otherworld.

Lunar Eclipses

There are two types of Lunar Eclipses – a partial eclipse and a  eclipse of the Moon.  Any type of magic is powerful during these times because the Moon and the Sun are in perfect union.

Magic and the Hours of the Day

Approximated Time:

This table's method is using 60 minutes per hour no matter what the season it may be. Use the time of sunrise to begin your timing. For example the sun rises at 5:32 am on Monday, the first hour will be 5:32 am to 6:32 am, which according to the table below is the hour of the Moon. This method is approximated, so it will be best to work in the middle of the hour to make sure you are within the correct hour.

Accurate Way:

This is a little more complicated and requires the sunrise and sunset hours. If the sun rises on Monday at 5:30 am and sets at 6:30 pm we will have a 13 hour day to work. We need to multiply the number of hours in the day (13) by 60 minutes. Then divide that number (780) by the number of hours between sunrise and sunset on this chart, which is 12. This gives us 65 minutes per hour. The first hour of the day on Monday is 5:30 am to 6:35 am. This will be used through out the day and will restart the following with new sunrise and sunset hours.

(Hours of the Day x 60 minutes) ÷ 12 hours = Total number of minutes per hour

Magic, the Moon and the Zodiac

Most of us are familiar with our Zodiac Sun Signs, which are the times during which the Sun travels through each sign of the Zodiac:

Aries - March 21 - April 20
Taurus - April 21 - May 21
Gemini - May 22 - June 21
Cancer - June 22 - July 22
Leo - July 23 -August 21
Virgo - August 22 - September 23
Libra - September 24 - October 23
Scorpio - October 24 - November 22
Sagittarius - November 23 - December 22
Capricorn - December 23 - January 20
Aquarius - January 21 - February 19
Pisces - February 20- March 20

The Moon also travels through each of the 12 signs of the Zodiac, spending approximately two days in each sign.

Each sign has specific influences which affect the atmosphere around us.  Although the Zodiac influences aren’t felt as strongly as the power that the days of the week impart, they can bring some new and unexpected aspects to our workings.  These influences will not take away from spell workings, but the influences can increase them.

Moon in Aries

Spells involving authority, willpower and rebirth.

Aries (a masculine fire sign) is a barren sign, not known for being conducive to inner-plane endeavors such as pathworking, dream word, or astral projection, although it is an excellent time to work magic for new ventures particularly if they are financial, medical, or related to construction. Because Aries is a fire sign it is energetic, good for working magic for personal strength and stamina. On the negative side it is also connected with impatience and dominance.

Moon in Taurus

Spells involving love, real estate, and money.

The moon in Taurus (a feminine earth sign) makes us protective and stubborn, and brings out our artistic natures. It's a good time for magick where issues of trust and loyalty are at stake, and it can give a boost of determination to see you through to the end of any endeavor. Astrologists say that the moon is "exalted" in Taurus, in this case meaning it stabilizes and hones the emotional influences of the moon. Passions can run high during this transit and spells to increase one's sensual nature are at their best. One warning, however: spells begun with the moon in stubborn Taurus may be hard to shut down once they are underway.

 Moon in Gemini

Spells involving communication, public relations and travel.

Gemini (a masculine air sign) is the most eclectic of all the signs, but also the most mercurial and fickle. Because the sign is ruled by Mercury, it is an excellent time for any type of spells concerning communication, writing, mass media, or for ferreting out one's hidden enemies. Moon in Gemini can make the superficial appear stable; you should not jump to conclusions about the success of your spells at this time. Healing spells also work very well during moon in Gemini.

Moon in Cancer

Spells involving domestic life and honoring lunar deities.

Cancer (a feminine water sign) is the home of the moon and is the most fertile sign in the zodiac. Virtually any venture undertaken during this time will grow favorably, especially psychic and inner-plane endeavors. This is also the best sign for dealing with matters relating to the home, fertility, pregnancy, children, or the emotions. Planting and growing are also under the influence of Cancer, and magic for any type of growth or increase will quickly take root. Moon in Cancer also brings out our protective natures and lets the imagination flourish.

Moon in Leo

Spells involving power over others, courage, childbirth.

In contrast to the fertile Cancer, Leo (a masculine fire sign) is the most barren sign in the zodiac, one seemingly desolate and unfit for magic. On the other hand, Leo is governed by the vibrant power of the sun, which rules prosperity, leadership, celebration, and celebrity. Moon in Leo brings out our magnanimous natures and can be a good time for working magic on behalf of others. On the negative side, it can make us self-indulgent, a time when the temptation to do negative or manipulative magic is strongest. This is also a fine transit for working spells for leaders, for the sane use of power, and for binding spells.

Moon in Virgo

Spells involving employment matters, health and intellectual matters.

Virgo (a feminine earth sign) is the fastidious intellectual of the zodiac. When the moon is in Virgo it is a good time to work with matters pertaining to education, volunteerism, and health. It is also a prime time for casting spells requiring great attention to detail, as this is also the province of Virgo. Spells worked for mental prowess, stability, and conscientiousness take deep roots in Virgo. Keep in mind that Mercury, the planet which rules Virgo, is cerebral, whereas the moon is emotional; this can be a source of either conflict or harmony for your spells, depending upon the desired outcome.

Moon in Libra

Spells involving court cases, partnerships and artistic matters.

While the moon is in Libra (a masculine air sign) our minds turn to aesthetics and to balance. It is a good time for couple's magic, and for all spells for peace and balance, or for the promotion of fairness and justice. Venus rules romance and this is a propitious transit for love magic. Spells requiring, or aligned with, diplomacy and adaptability also work well.

Moon in Scorpio

Spells involving secrets, power and psychic growth.

Scorpio (a feminine water sign) is the keeper of secrets, and a good time to try and unlock occult wisdom through divination and ritual. It is also a very fertile sign and a good time to work on fertility and sex magic. Matters pertaining to deceit, trustworthiness, and things hidden are best dealt with now. Scorpio is the sign of ambition, and spells for personal promotion work well at this time. Ruled by Pluto, the sign is linked to the work of the dead, and conditions for solid magic for the spirit world are optimal. This transit is very compatible with almost all lunar spellwork.

Moon in Sagittarius

Spells involving publications, sports and the truth.

Moon in Sagittarius (a masculine fire sign) makes us all philosophers and places us in a frame of mind to deal with issues of humanity, peace, and the right way of the universe. Sagittarius is the sign of the non-conformist, an excellent time to experiment with new spells and ritual methods. Because of its optimistic nature, challenges are often accepted during this transit, making it a good time to work magic for the more elusive things in your life.

Moon in Capricorn

Spells involving career, political matters and ambition.

While the moon is in stable Capricorn (a feminine earth sign) is the time for dealing with material concerns, such as magic for obtaining a much needed item. It is also a transit when pessimism and despondency tend to come to the forefront. If you are prone to depression, avoid divination during this transit and, instead, work spells for a better mental attitude. This is a time of stability, when grounding rituals and centering rituals work especially well. The influence of Capricorn's ruling planet, Saturn, can assist in uncovering past-lives and overcoming past negative influences.

Moon in Aquarius

Spells involving science, freedom, personal expression, problem solving, friendship.

There's been a lot of New Age hype about the sterling qualities of Aquarius (a masculine air sign) but, like all the signs, it has its negative aspects. These include a tendency to selfishness, air-headedness, thought without action, and generally allowing one's mind to wander aimlessly in some vast pseudo-intellectual wilderness. However, it is also a time when people as a whole tend to be inspired to higher consciousness. Because of this, the Aquarian transit is a good time for troubled covens to meet. Magic for world peace and understanding are best undertaken during this sign.

Moon in Pisces

Spells involving music, telepathy and clairvoyance.

Because of the dualistic character of the Piscean Age, Pisces (a feminine water sign) has gotten a bad reputation as a two-faced character. This is anything but true. Ruled by watery Neptune, Pisces is a highly psychic sign and is a good time to try that divination method which has always eluded you. The two fish which symbolize the sign point not merely in two different directions. but the upper and lower worlds, and the inner and outer realms, offering us a bridge between them. It is a time when emotions can become clouded and melancholy. Moon in Pisces brings out our compassionate natures and can aid in making magic for others. It is also a good time for dream work, astral projection, guided meditations, and is highly compatible with all lunar spellwork. Second only to Cancer, Pisces is the most fertile of all the signs.

As a footnote to the above, please observe the following information about the 12 signs of the Zodiac:

Broadly speaking, the 12 signs of the Zodiac can be divided into both masculine and feminine, positive and negative, or, active and passive. The masculine signs are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius, whereas the feminine signs are Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces.

The Quaternaries

The Quaternaries are three in number - this means that the 12 signs of the Zodiac are divided into three categories of four signs each. They are called the Cardinal signs, the Fixed signs and the Mutable signs.

The Cardinal signs
The Cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn which are the signs of dynamic change, movement and great vitality.

The Fixed signs
The Fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius and relate to stability, earthiness and fixity. The determination of the Fixed signs expresses itself in the form of great willpower.

The Mutable signs
The Mutable signs cover Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces which are the adaptable and interchangeable signs capable of moulding and modifying circumstances and conditions in life.

Magic and the Planets

As you read above, the days of the week and the hours of the day are associated with the planets.  Of course, when these traditions were set forth, the only planets known to us were those that could be seen with the naked eye.  Therefore they included the Sun, the Moon, Venus, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn.  The planets, like the days of the week, hold certain characteristics:

The Moon – Intuition

The Sun – Self Expression

Jupiter – Money

Mars – Energy

Venus – Love

Saturn – Focus

Mercury – Choices

Here are a few examples of some planetary invocations - one for each of the planets:
