 The Satanic Altar

It is not always possible for everyone to set aside a special place to perform ritual and spell workings.  If this is true for you, it is not something that should concern you at all.

If you have limited space, you could always set up an altar that is easily stored.  For example, your altar supplies could be kept in a 30-gallon storage container in a closet, and the container itself could be used as your altar surface.

If the above isn't a possibility, you simply need to  find some time to yourself - wherever and whenever that is, and use the Satanic tools that are ALWAYS at your disposal -your desire and intentions - which are the most powerful tools you possess

If you do have the room and a way to set up a Sacred Space for your workings, what follows is a list of supplies you should keep upon your Satanic Altar.

THE ALTAR

This can be any surface sufficient for your needs.  Your altar should be placed so that when you stand in front of it, you are facing the South.

ALTAR CLOTH

Although black is the most-used cloth to cover the Satanic Altar, you may use whatever you find pleasing to you.  For example, if you were planning on working a healing, you might choose a green cloth;  if you are working a love or lust spell, you might choose a red cloth.  Perhaps you just like purple, or perhaps the Demon you wish to summon has a particular preference.  Trust your Satanic instincts, and indulge your imagination!

ALTAR TILE

This can be made from any material, but should have an inverted pentagram on it.

ATHAME/SWORD

The Athame is obviously much easier to use indoors, and is also quite easy to store away if need be.

BELL/GONG

This is used to purify the air at the beginning of Ritual and again at the end...it is usually rung/sounded nine times.

BOWL

This is a small bowl into which you will place water prior to Ritual.  It will be placed on the West side of your altar.

CANDLES

Black.  One black candle should always stand apart from the others to signify the Black Flame.  The candles should be placed at the back of the altar so you are not reaching over them during workings.

CANDLE SNUFFER

This, of course, is optional.  When I was very young and just beginning upon my path, I remember reading that it is somehow disrespectful to blow-out the candles at the end of Ritual and magical workings.  I cannot remember why, and I have been to many rituals where the candles have been blown out at the end.  However, what I read as a child has stayed with me, and I always use a snuffer to extinguish my candles.

CAULDRON

This is optional.  Personally, I keep a very small caudron on my altar to use for burning parchment, when required.

CHALICE/GOBLET

This does not have to be anything fancy, it may be a simple glass that you set aside for your magical workings.  Although it is the custom to fill the chalice with wine, you may use anything you wish - water, etc.

INCENSE BURNER/CENSOR

Whatever works best for the incense you use.  This should be placed to the East on your altar.

MATCHES

To light your candles and incense

OIL

This is to consecrate yourself and any other attendees.

PATEN

This is a small shallow plate.  I keep two on my altar.  One onto which I place salt prior to ritual, and keep on the North side of my altar, and one that I use for unholy communion, if needed.

RITUAL CLOAK

This really isn't a part of your altar, but it is a part of your magical workings.  Of course, if you do not have one, it is not a problem.  You may wear whatever you like, but I recommend that you dress in black for Ritual.  We will discuss this further in another post, but for now, I will say that Ritual and Spell workings are Sacred times, and therefore, I believe that your personal preparation is as important as all of the other tools you will gather.

STATUE/PICTURES

I keep a picture of the Baphomet upon my altar.  At times, I also place an inverted cross on the altar. I have statues that are devoted to Dark Gods and Goddesses that have meaning to me, to Demons, and, of course to Satan and to Lucifer.  You may place whatever pleases you upon your altar.

                     Baphomet

We've all seen Baphomet. Surprisingly, few truly look at the symbolism in the picture, and even fewer find the lessons contained within. We all have different opinions as to the meaning of the symbols. The following is my interpretation of the symbols.

Goat Head
- To me, the goat head symbolizes independence and curiosity. Goats are inquisitive, curious, and independent creatures. Sheep (used as a symbol for followers of Yahweh) don't really care to learn and are largely dependent upon a group. We are the goats to the Christians' sheep. The goat head also symbolizes the element of earth.

Torch - The torch represents knowledge. We all have the burning fire of knowledge within. It's position in the picture can also represent the concept of mind over matter. The torch, of course, also symbolizes the element of fire.

Androgynous Traits - There are a few androgynous traits present in the picture. You have breast (also symbolizing fertility and abundance) alongside the hairy chest. One arm is male, while the other is female. To me, this represents the merging of masculine and feminine thought (left brain and right brain) a la the alchemical sacred marriage.

Wings - To me the wings also symbolize freedom. Birds soar for miles and are not restricted by gravity. They also symbolize the element of air.

The Two Moons - The presence of the dark and light moons symbolizes polarity and balance. Light cannot exist without darkness, and no matter what, the universe will always balance itself.

Tattoos - The words in the tattoos translate to "know thyself". Without knowledge of oneself , we cannot expect to fully understand anything. Mastery of the self is essential.

Fish Scales - To me, they symbolize the element of water.

Staff - The staff represents eternal life. As we all know, our souls do not die. We are eternal.

Pentagram - As we all know, the pentagram symbolizes the balance of the elements and spirit.

All of these qualities are important to mastering the self and unleashing our true potential. Look to Baphomet and you will be taught many lessons

The Al Jilwah

The Black Book of Satan

Chapter One

I was, am now, and shall have no end.  I exercise dominion over all creatures and over the affairs of all who are under the protection of my image.  I am ever present to help all who trust in me and call upon me in time of need.  There is no place in the universe that knows not my presence.  I participate in all the affairs, which those who are without call evil because their nature is not such as they approve.

Every age has its own manager, who directs affairs according to my decrees.  This office is changeable from generation to generation, that the ruler of this world and his chiefs may discharge the duties of their respective offices everyone in his own turn.  I allow everyone to follow the dictates of his own nature, but he that opposes me will regret it sorely.

No god has a right to interfere in my affairs, and I have made it an imperative rule that everyone shall refrain from worshipping all gods.  All of the books of those who are without are altered by them; and they have declined from them, although they were written by the prophets and the apostles.  That there are interpolations is seen in the fact that each sect endeavors to prove that the others are wrong and to destroy their books.

To me truth and falsehood are known.  When temptation comes, I give my covenant to him that trusts in me.  Moreover, I give council to the skilled directors, for I have appointed them for periods that are known to me.  I remember necessary affairs and execute them in due time.  I teach and guide those who follow my instruction.  If anyone obey me and conform to my commandments, he shall have joy, delight, and comfort.

Chapter Two

I requite the descendants of Adam, and reward them with various rewards that I alone know. Moreover, power and dominion over all that is on earth, both that which is above and that which is beneath, are in my hands.  I do not allow friendly association with other people, nor do I deprive them that are m own and that obey me of anything that is good for them.  I place my affairs in the hands of those whom I have tried and who are in accord with my desires.  I appear in diverse manners to those who are faithful and under my command.  I give and take away;  I enrich and impoverish;  I cause both happiness and misery.  I do all this in keeping with the characteristics of each epoch. And none has a right to interfere with my management of affairs.  Those who oppose me I afflict with disease;  but my own shall not die like the sons of Adam that are without.  None shall live in this world longer than the time set by me; and if I so desire, I send a person a second or third time into this world or into some other by the transmigration of souls.

Chapter Three

I lead to the straight path without a revealed book;  I direct aright my beloved and chose ones by unseen means.  All my teachings are easily applicable to all times and all conditions.  I punish in another world all who do contrary to my will.

Now the sons of Adam do not know the state of things that is to come.  For this reason, they fall into many errors. The beasts of the earth, the birds of heaven and the fish of the sea are all under the control of my hands.  All treasures and hidden things are known to me; and as I desire, I take them from one and bestow them upon another.

I reveal my wonders to those who seek them, and in due time my miracles to those who receive them from me.  But those who are without are my adversaries, hence they oppose me. Nor do they know that such a course is against their own interests, for might, wealth and riches are in my hands, and I bestow them upon every worthy descendant of Adam.  Thus the government of the worlds, the transition of generations, and the changes of their directors are determined by me from the beginning.

Chapter Four

I will not give my rights to other gods.  I have allowed the creation of four substances, four times and four corners;  because they are necessary things for creatures.

The books of Jews, Christians and Muslims, as of those who are without, accept in a sense, i.e., so far as they agree with and conform to my statutes.  Whatsoever is contrary to these, they have altered;  do not accept it.  Three things are against me and I hate three things.  But those who keep my secrets shall receive the fulfillment of my promises.  Those who suffer for my sake I will surely reward in one of the worlds.

It is my desire that all my followers unite in a bond of unity, lest those who are without prevail against them.  Now, then, all ye who have followed my commandments and my teachings, reject all the teachings and sayings of such as are without.

I have not taught these teachings, nor do they proceed from me.  Do not mention my name nor my attributes, lest ye regret it; for ye do not know what those who are without may do.

Chapter Five

O yeah that have believed in me, honor my symbol and my image, for they remind you of me.  Observe my laws and statutes.  Obey my servants and listen to whatever they may dictate to you of the hidden things.  Receive that, that is dictated, and do not carry it before those who are without, Jews, Christians, Muslims and others; for they know not the nature of my teaching.  Do not give them your books, lest thy alter them without your knowledge.  Learn by heart the greater part of them, lest they be altered.\
